AI and VR, an unexpected alliance

Date: 27 March 2019 18:00 - 20:00

Based at Digital Catapult Northern Ireland, this event will investigate the potential for virtual reality (VR) tooling to assist in artificial intelligence (AI) (and vice versa).

Join us on 27 March as we hear from a range of industry experts who have feet in both the VR and AI worlds. The Belfast event will provide the opportunity to explore the use of AI in immersive development (vice versa). Although advanced machine learning techniques can be applied in a huge range of contexts. This event will explore the creative space and opportunities for the latest techniques for immersive technologies.

Who should attend

This event is designed for companies, academics and developers who are interested in understanding how VR may be applied to artificial intelligence.

Why you should attend

This event will be comprised of presentations, workshops and panel discussions designed to educate and stimulate discussion but more importantly to highlight the vibrant Northern Ireland AI community.

Key speakers

Greg Maguire – Humain

Greg has been instrumental in the launch and development of numerous of animation heavy-hitters including Walt Disney Feature Animation, Industrial Light & Magic, and now Belfast-based Humain. Humain’s mission is to make 3D character creation easier for VFX artists, video game developers and emerging technologies. Humain are investigating how AI can help disrupt the animation industry and how Humain’s capabilities can help solve some of AI’s problems. Greg’s credits include “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Avatar”.

David Trainor – Sentireal – AI for Automatic Personalisation and Assessment of Immersive Media for Training Applications

David will give an overview of how artificial intelligence plays two vital roles in Sentireal’s virtual, augmented and mixed-reality media and software systems, optimised for training applications in enterprise markets such as healthcare. These roles are (i) automatic personalisation of the immersive media presented to each trainee (ii) automated assessment of trainee performance against a course curriculum or industry performance standard. David will present some examples of how trainee engagement and performance is improved through this combination of virtual, augmented and mixed-reality media and AI.

Luke McNeice – Kainos – Immersive tech: Pay attention or get left out of the reality

Luke McNeice, Innovation Lead at Kainos Software talk will give a glimpse into what drives Kainos R&D. He will discuss recent Kainos Innovation projects and why immersive technology is interesting now, will be more interesting in the future and why, particularly those interested in AI should be paying attention.

Kris Kelly – Enter Yes

BAFTA nominated director Kris Kelly will talk about the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to depict memories in his latest feature film ‘Kings of Sumava’ and how he sees this technology affecting the immersive sector. www.enteryes.com/about
