Accelerating UK-NL AI collaboration towards net zero - Digital Catapult

About this event

Join this online event, created in partnership between Digital Catapult and The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the UK, for a snapshot overview of the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape in the Netherlands and the UK, and to explore new opportunities for cross-country collaboration in the area of net zero.

AI and machine learning (ML) are of significant importance to both countries. This game changing set of technologies is driving innovative solutions to business, environmental and societal challenges, including global net zero goals. International collaboration in this area is vital to success.

Through a group discussion session, this event will look to connect key organisations across AI innovation ecosystems in the UK and Netherlands, and build on Digital Catapult’s report recommendations for the co-creation of future bilateral AI demonstrator projects, that can showcase how AI and ML will enable industrial net zero, and drive the future sustainability and resilience of supply chains.

Speakers

Sana Khareghani

Head of the UK Office for AI

Holding a BSc in Computer Science and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sana Khareghani has over 20 years’ experience in technology and business across the private and public sectors. She has worked as a software engineer in big corporates and start-ups, as a management consultant advising senior officials throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East, and in HMG, currently and over the past year as Head of the Office for AI – a joint unit between Department for Digital, Media, Culture and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Stefan Leijnen

International Advisor at Netherlands AI Coalition

Stefan Leijnen is advisor to the Netherlands AI Coalition (NL AIC), a public-private partnership in which government, business sector, educational and research institutions, as well as civil society organisations collaborate to accelerate and connect AI developments and initiatives in order to position the Netherlands at the forefront of knowledge and application of AI for prosperity and well-being. He coordinates international affairs for the NL AIC, as well as the research & innovation working group. Apart from his work for the NL AIC, Stefan is also professor of artificial intelligence at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands.

Dr. Jochen Cremer

Co-Director of the TU Delft AI Energy Lab

Dr. Jochen Cremer is the Co-Director of the TU Delft AI Energy Lab and an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science. He is also Research Associate at Imperial College London. Jochen’s research focuses on applying machine learning and data analytics to energy systems operation and control. The TU Delft AI Energy lab team develops new computational methods for system operation and control that combine statistical machine learning and mathematical optimisation.

Nick Pappas

Business Development Manager, Hartree Centre | STFC | UKRI

Nick is a Business Development Manager for the Hartree Centre of the UKRI Science and Technology Facilities Council. Within his role, he has a sector focus in the Life Sciences, Biotech and Pharmaceuticals industries. He has a scientific background in Chemistry, Biotechnology & Molecular Biology and brings on-board more than 15 years of industry knowledge and experience having worked in multiple roles within Life Sciences; from drug discovery and drug manufacturing, to scientific instrumentation, consultancy and commercialisation of disruptive technologies.

Philip Young

Director Strategy and External Affairs

Digital Catapult’s Director of Policy, Research & Strategic Engagement, Philip Young has a strong background in emerging technology policy, research and strategic decision making with both domestic and international experience.

Alessandra Venier

Policy, Research and Engagement Manager, Digital Catapult

Alessandra Venier is a Policy, Research and Engagement Manager at Digital Catapult with an interest and focus on AI policy and ethics. She co-authored the report that will be launched during this event, and has worked on a number of market research pieces and innovation/R&D projects from a policy perspective. She has a background in public affairs and has coordinated engagement opportunities between industry, startups and government.
