The UK civil aerospace industry is 2nd largest in the world after the USA. 90% of what is produced in the UK is exported. The UK sector has a reputation as a global centre of excellence for engines, wings, helicopters, structures and aircraft systems including landing gear. Digital Catapult has been active in helping companies in the UK to understand and successfully adopt and gain value from advanced digital technologies including AI, IoT and immersive systems.
Over the last few years in the defence sector, there has been a major shift towards the use of ‘non-traditional defence technologies’. These include advanced digital technologies such as AI, immersive technologies and IoT.
The MoD’s future strategy expresses the need to achieve a number of goals for the next two years. These include:
- Seeing data exploited at both scale & speed – data needs to be accessed and used as a ‘strategic asset’ in conjunction with the technology game-changers, adopted at pace
- The delivery of a modern technology platform – a single backbone to support integration and platform interoperability
Digital Catapult is supporting the MoD, the UK’s Frontline Commands and the primary supply chain companies – to help them to adopt these new technologies and to work with a vast network of digital innovators from across the UK.
