Bewica

British startup Bewica, set out to create an insurance product that would offer UK small businesses comprehensive cyber insurance and protection as well as AI-based cyber risk assessments and advice. It joined Cyber 101 to build its network and find distribution and product partners.

UK small businesses need cyber protection

UK Government research* has shown that 42% of UK small businesses have identified at least one breach or cyber attack last year and 74% say that cyber security is a high priority. With this context, cofounders Eva Berg-Winters and Josep Casals set out to create a new insurance product that would provide affordable and comprehensive cyber insurance and protection for small UK businesses as well as AI-based automated risk assessments and advice.

When joining Digital Catapult, Bewica had only just begun its journey. It engaged with Digital Catapult to find other cyber security companies that could either complement its proposition with tools that make companies safer and / or distribute Bewica’s proposition.

Cyber 101 offers business skills, technology deep dives and networking opportunities

Bewica joined the Cyber 101 programme, participating in a variety of the activities on offer including an initial bootcamp that covered all the topics a fledgling cyber business needs to consider and strategy meetings that provided opportunities to meet other cyber business owners.

Cyber 101 is part of DCMS funded activity to grow the UK’s cyber security industry and the capability of cyber security startups and scaleups. It works across all sectors because security is a common concern for all UK businesses. This programme is linked to the Develop strand of the UK Government’s National Cyber Security Strategy, a series of activities that will be supported by £1.9bn in public investment over the next five years. It is delivered in partnership with Digital Catapult, The Accelerator Network, CSIT and Inogesis.

Cyber 101 grew Bewica’s network, helping it meet potential business partners

Joining Cyber 101 gave Bewica a forum to exchange information and learn from other cyber industry peers. As a result of participating, Bewica is in discussions with two other companies about starting a business venture together.

The company is now successfully in the market selling insurance and has grown its team to include five people. It is continuing to participate in the programme as a way to find partners and generate leads so that it can continue to grow.
