Digital Catapult deploys LPWAN and IoT at Farnborough International Airshow

Posted 16 Jul 2018

Digital Catapult creates low power wide area network at show to collect real time data for the first time

London, 16 July 2018 – The UK’s leading innovation centre, Digital Catapult, has deployed the first low-power wide-area network (LPWAN) network at Farnborough International Airshow (FIA) enabling organisers to monitor a range of metrics in real time. In the Aerospace 4.0 hall, at stand number 5003, visitors will be able to see a demonstration of the LPWAN network Digital Catapult set up which covers the entire 310-hectare (770-acre) airport and will remain in place once the show ends.

Recent work with the RAF will also be shared by Digital Catapult at the show, including a demonstration of wide-area, low-cost asset condition monitoring.

Two startups, AltoNovus and VRM Tech, will be showing off their provision of site-wide metrics with Digital Catapult. AltoNovus will be monitoring visitor footfall and crowd movements and VRM Tech will track environmental parameters such as humidity and temperature, showing results in real time on a 3D map.

Sameer Savani, Head of Innovation and Engineering at ADS Group, comments: “The show’s bespoke LPWAN network is giving us live reports on power usage, visitor numbers and even conditions like humidity. It lets us optimise to save money and ensure the best environment conditions. We’re excited to continue using the network once the show ends and thank Digital Catapult and their startups for showing its potential. We know that digital technology and data are key in aerospace, and as the world’s premier trade show for the industry, we’re keen to make sure we are also making the most of those emerging technologies.”

Geraldina Iraheta, Director of Business Development at Digital Catapult, says: “Technologies such as LPWAN offer secure and affordable solutions for aerospace applications such as asset tracking and condition monitoring. We are proud to demonstrate examples of this advanced digital technology in action at Farnborough International Airshow.”

Digital Catapult is a trusted innovation service provider to the UK’s A&D sector and is working with big industry players to develop the use of IoT technologies. It is also driving advanced digital technology adoption by supporting startups to develop their solutions and helping them enter the market.

About Digital Catapult

Digital Catapult is the UK’s leading advanced digital technology innovation centre, driving early adoption of technologies to make UK businesses more competitive and productive to grow the country’s economy.
We connect large established companies, startup and scaleup businesses and researchers to discover new ways to solve big challenges in the manufacturing and creative industries. Through this collaboration businesses are supported to develop the right technologies to solve problems, increase productivity and open up new markets faster.

Digital Catapult provides physical and digital facilities for experimentation and testing that would otherwise not be accessible for smaller companies.

As well as breaking down barriers to technology adoption for startups and scaleups, our work de-risks innovation for large enterprises and uncovers new commercial applications in immersive, future networks, and artificial intelligence technologies.

About VRM Tech

VRM is focused on the built environment and provides bespoke software solutions as well as consulting activities. They integrate their platform with the existing Building Management System (BMS) and then complement this with LPWAN based IoT sensors that collect additional environmental parameters such as humidity and temperature. In this way the performance and operation of the building infrastructure, such as air conditioning, can be optimised to both save money as well as to ensure the optimum environment for the inhabitants.

About AltoNovus

AltoNovus’ mission is to gather and provide usable management information to decision makers who operate buildings or venues. AltoNovus brings low power radio networks and proven sensor technology, allied to exceptional battery powered performance, to bear efficiently.
