AI for Decarbonisation's Virtual Centre of Excellence

Supporting the development of innovative AI technologies for decarbonisation applications to drive the UK's transition to net zero.

The UK has committed to reaching net zero, but getting there depends on solving complex decarbonisation challenges across some of the country’s highest-emitting sectors — from how we heat our homes to how we manufacture steel.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to accelerate that transition. But too often, AI innovation happens in isolation from the industries that need it most. AI Developers can struggle to build effective solutions without deep sector knowledge. Meanwhile businesses know their problems but not which AI approaches could help. Underpinning this, investment flows to familiar use cases while high-impact opportunities go unnoticed.

ADViCE — the AI for Decarbonisation Virtual Centre of Excellence — exists to close that gap. We connect AI researchers and innovators with UK industry, investors, policymakers, and academia to apply AI solutions to high-emitting areas where decarbonisation would have a massive impact.

Funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero as part of the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio, ADViCE is delivered by Digital Catapult, Energy Systems Catapult, and the Alan Turing Institute. Together, we map the landscape, identify the most impactful challenges, produce research and analysis, and bring the right people together to act on them.

Our focus spans five high-emitting sectors — agriculture, built environment, energy, manufacturing, and transport — where targeted AI applications can unlock step-change reductions in carbon emissions.

Recognising the urgent need to reduce emissions, this report showcases the proven potential of AI and data science to advance the sustainability agenda, helping to build an ecosystem confident in using these technologies to tackle decarbonisation challenges.
