Improving product compliance throughout the high-value component manufacturing process using IoT and data analytics

Rolls-Royce

Digital Catapult has been helping Rolls-Royce create new service offerings and unlock design, manufacturing and operational efficiencies. This activity has been delivered through agile sprints which helped to identify key challenges that could be resolved with artificial intelligence and related technologies.

Rollys-Royce wanted to understand how IoT and data analytics could improve the success of product compliance throughout the high-value component manufacturing process.

They brought this challenge to Digital Catapult so that they could get access to our proven innovation programmes and our expansive network of high calibre, innovative small businesses and researchers.

In certain manufacturing processes, there are few opportunities to check the quality of a component. These tend to be grouped towards the end of the process, when the root-causes of poor-quality may not be obvious.

For example, a typical casting process may have over sixty individual operations. A defect in the manufacture of a component might currently only be detectable after the the last operation in the process.

Rolls-Royce wants to explore the potential of data analytics and IoT to allow component monitoring along the production line.

This will help it understand:

  • The quality of a component as it progresses through the process
  • The potential of a component to fail in future stages of the process
  • Tooling / machine / process performance as indicated by component defects

There is a desire to process data from sensors and manufacturing equipment, and use data analytics to allow early decisions to be made as to the likely final compliance of the component and the cost-effectiveness of corrective action.

Furthermore, Rolls-Royce is interested in machine intelligence applications that can retrospectively identify causes of poor-quality and allow them to adjust processes to reduce defects.

Digital Catapult featured this challenge in a Hack & Pitch event at the Industry 4.0 summit in February 2018.
