Industrial Net Zero Innovation Centre (INZIC)

Accelerating net zero industrial supply chains through the early adoption of advanced digital technologies

The Cambridge-based Industrial Net Zero Innovation Centre (INZIC) is a future joint initiative between Digital Catapult and TWI Ltd.

The UK was the first major economy in the world to commit to ending its contribution to global warming by 2050 (‘net zero’ carbon). To help industry meet this requirement, INZIC works with existing businesses and supply chains, finding ways of using advanced digital technologies to measure environmental impact, reduce waste, optimise use and extend asset life, and improve end-of-life recyclability.

INZIC helps to drive the development and adoption of new business models, products, applications and services that meet the needs for industrial net zero in the UK, getting them to market faster. At the same time, it is working to create a legacy for the future of net zero capabilities and opportunities across the UK. Partners from UK academia, research and technology organisations are also involved in the initiative, based on their specialist facilities, knowledge and industrial access.

Other aims of the initiative include:

  • Developing a suite of Future Networks, IoT and artificial intelligence/machine learning tools that can be retrofitted to legacy industrial equipment, extending asset life and reducing energy consumption
  • Creating an open source governance framework and distributed data platform to enable OEMs, owners and operators of wind turbines and wind farms to improve operational efficiencies and maximise energy supply
  • Accelerating the implementation and impact of measurement and monitoring tools developed by TWI
