The SmartRAN Open Networks Interoperability Centre (SONIC Labs) is a new long-term joint programme of work between Digital Catapult and Ofcom, with the goal to help foster a diverse telecom supply chain in and for the UK. This will be driven through building and operating a large scale interoperability and integration testing facility for companies developing mobile networks technology in pre-commercial product stage. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior Mobile Network Architect to join Digital Catapult to work in the SONIC Labs programme, joining an established 5G technical team and a growing SONIC Labs Programme team. This is a pivotal role within the SONIC Labs programme team to deliver technical solutions that meet complex requirements from a broad range of stakeholders. The successful candidate will lead the work of designing the SONIC Labs technical platform and its deployment. The SONIC Labs technical platform will consist of commercial-grade multi-tenancy common infrastructure, representative field (outdoor and indoor) mobile network, and monitoring and testing solutions to support open mobile networks product development testing and innovation activities, such as Open RAN. what you’ll do
  • Lead the design system level architecture for the SONIC Labs technical platform, including end to end open mobile networks for integration and interoperability testing, indoor and outdoor network testbeds and integration of testing solutions
  • Work with a broad range of customers and partners to understand the requirements and translate these into platform solution designs. For example, suppliers, vendors, mobile technology providers, as well as shared network infrastructure operators, and system integrators
  • Provide technical leadership to the team(s) that will build and commission the network
  • Drive system integration activities to support SONIC Labs customers in their innovation journey through integration and interoperability testing
  • Act as a subject matter expert across mobile network infrastructure and solutions, with a focus on open networks and virtualised networks
  • Work closely with 5G Technology, Design, Engineering and other technology teams, the Mobile System Architect will ensure that we collectively deliver on the SONIC Labs programme objectives, and that SONIC Labs supports the mission of Digital Catapult as whole
  • Adopt cutting edge technologies and and acting as a driver for cross-technology integration
what we’re looking for
  • Proven expertise and experience in designing access and core mobile networks, with expertise on the current best practice and technology roadmaps
  • Have a good broad knowledge and practical experience in modern mobile network infrastructure architecture and solutions in a commercial context, including virtualisation, network and service orchestration, radio disaggregation, service based architecture, transport architectures
  • Excellent communicator, able to influence multiple stakeholders within and outside Digital Catapult, able to interact with anyone, to CxO level, with an ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Demonstrable ability to lead technical teams. Able to guide teams in design and work out what components, services, 3rd party solutions and integrations should be implemented, and design how they will work together
  • Knowledge of system integration patterns, management and monitoring solutions for networks, including cloud-based solutions for network management. Experience of application of these in real deployments
  • Knowledge of modern development practices, such as DevOps or CI/CD approaches, agile methods, and the role that architects can play in agile teams
