Head of Technology - IoT

We are looking for a Head of Technology for our ambitious Internet of Things programme. This is a diverse and influential role, collaborating with startups, corporates, industry, suppliers and government agencies. You will be jointly accountable for strategy and direction, long-term vision and success of the programme including impact and revenue, budget and resourcing. You will own the technology roadmap in this space, develop programmes and products to help companies working with IoT, identifying barriers to growth and adoption and the cutting edge developments and innovations which will enable adoption and help UK industry. You are an experienced technology leader in IoT with excellent insight into technology trends and possess clear understanding and credibility in the IoT or industrial IoT space. You have excellent communication skills, being able to communicate complex technical issues to a range of stakeholders and engage in collaborations and partnerships as well as technology issues. It is an exciting time to be joining one of our highest performing areas as the co-lead for the programme with a business development counterpart. This is a great role for someone with strong and demonstrable experience in leading a technology function focused on application and adoption of technologies to solve strategic industry challenges. what you’ll do
  • Leadership of a major programme of work, alongside a counterpart from the commercial team. Technology ownership for the IoT programme. Act as senior and respected technology expert for the IoT area, keeping up with latest developments
  • Build profile and visibility for the programme and for Digital Catapult. Build consensus across the organisation and develop productive relationships across our ecosystem: industry, government, startups, academia
  • Major contributions to the organisation’s strategy and work plan
  • initiation of new partnerships, projects and funding opportunities
  • Jointly responsible for sourcing and delivery of revenue targets, both for commercial clients and R&D / grant funding. Secure larger funded projects to grow the programme area
  • Leading a team of technologists. Line management, recruitment, reviews and performance management, succession planning, motivation and morale, coaching
  • Pitching, explaining and communicating our work, including high profile speaking engagements, partnership negotiations and press
  • Working with the delivery team to champion and oversee delivery of key projects
what we’re looking for
  • Established thought leader, externally recognised leading expertise and experience within the IoT and ideally the industrial IoT space. Evidence of a strong UK and International network in the area
  • Broad business and industry knowledge. Understanding how IoT technologies provide value alongside other emerging technologies such as 5G, DLT, AI and Immersive
  • Evidence of winning and executing on successful large-scale impactful projects, whether from startups, larger companies or academia
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills: can show examples such as presentations at high profile events, establishing partnerships or client relationships, written work
  • Proactive and self-confident, adaptable and able to cope with ambiguity, changing and evolving priorities whilst being able to identify new opportunities
  • Adaptable communication style - able to liaise with and influence a variety of stakeholders including public sector organisations, industry and manufacturing corporations, startups, technology organisations. You are comfortable discussing detailed technology and R&D, as well as understanding business needs and challenges
  • Team and people management experience - experience of both direct line management and working with teams in a matrix structure is required
  • Successful experience of working in an R&D environment, capability to gain instant credibility in a senior R&D technology community, experience of winning funding for R&D projects
  • Experience of working in digital automation of manufacturing and production environments is an advantage
