The CTO role at Digital Catapult is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the most exciting digital technologies and to drive projects and programmes that will benefit the UK’s economy and society as a whole. Digital Catapult helps trailblazer companies, both startups and large organisations alike, to develop and demonstrate innovative and successful advanced digital technology products, services, experiences and business models for UK industry to emulate. To do this, we focus on ambitious programmes in artificial intelligence and machine learning, future networks, immersive technologies and blockchain. The CTO provides technology leadership to the Catapult’s 130 strong team of exceptional and diverse technologists, software engineers and designers, as well as our commercial partnerships and programme delivery teams from the best of industry and academia. Our brilliant people inspire, drive and deliver economic impact across the UK and around the world, working closely with government, academia, traditional industry and the startup scaleup eco-system to empower innovators, entrepreneurs, businesses and academics alike. This CTO role will suit someone with a strong foundation in technology R&D and commercial applications development environments and who has experience in building and inspiring multidisciplinary teams. They will have a strong desire to influence the future of technology application development and will possess an appreciation of its real potential to positively impact the UK’s economy and our society. what you’ll do
  • Influence the UK’s technology roadmap by providing vision, thought leadership and direction from within Digital Catapult
  • Be a leading voice for the UK’s technology strategy and vision in in the UK’s research and innovation community as well as in European and international forums through talks, articles and interviews
  • Build trusted partnerships with the startup ecosystem, scaleups, established commercial partners, universities and policy makers
  • Strengthen existing acceleration programmes (such as Augmentor, CreativeXR, MIGarage), specialist facilities and resources (such as the Immersive lab, 5G testbeds, AI compute resources) and build new useful capabilities and facilities
  • Lead the Technology team in a wide range of projects building proofs of concept and experimenting with early stage technologies, for both commercial partners and grant funded R&D projects
  • Mentor, coach and inspire senior technology leaders (direct reports) to enable them to have a greater impact on their clients, partners and teams and work with them to identify, fund, build and scale high-impact technology interventions
  • Promote a culture of cross-technology and cross-discipline collaboration, breaking silos and enabling even greater creativity
  • Play a key role on the Digital Catapult executive team, contribute to the strategic purpose and vision of the organisation and help navigate the organisation through the challenges of rapid growth and scaling
what we’re looking for
  • A highly credible technology leader who is comfortable, experienced and effective working at the highest levels within industry groups, the startup community and in academic and government settings
  • Executive level experience and evidence of driving the technology strategy and vision for an organisation to support its commercial and impact goals
  • Track record of developing and leading highly skilled and diverse technology teams and with experience across a variety of organisation sizes, project styles, sectors and technologies
  • A background in technology R&D, as well as experience of working in startups and/ or commercial settings
  • Ideally, with technical depth in at least one of our focused technology areas as well as a broad knowledge of software development, hardware, IT service provision and relevant governance & compliance: cybersecurity, GDPR, data governance
  • Commercially astute, adept at navigating through matrixed organisations and able to work with different business models to enable the scaling of a technology-led organisation
  • Collaborative and aligned to the company’s values of ambition, curiosity, optimism and openness
  • Comfortable speaking on the national and international stage and dealing with the press/ media
  • A leader who thrives on enabling and encouraging the success of others and will invest time and effort in coaching and developing the talented technology leadership team we have in place
  • PhD desirable in computer science or a related field
