Digital Catapult is looking for a Lead Technologist for our Immersive programme, working across Virtual, Augmented, Mixed Reality and related technologies. From a standing start just over 2 years ago, the programme now comprises a network of Immersive Labs around the UK, the Dimension studio for advanced volumetric capture, the Augmentor accelerator, the CreativeXR programme funding innovative immersive content, a significant role in the government’s Audiences of the Future programme, numerous published reports and a host of strong relationships across the larger commercial players, startups, universities and government. It is an exciting time to be joining one of our highest-growth areas as the co-lead for the programme. This is a great role for someone with strong and demonstrable experience with immersive technologies. The ideal candidate is proactive, cheerful, creative, collaborative and organised.

what you’ll do
  • Leadership of a major programme of work, alongside a counterpart from the business development team
  • Technology ownership for the immersive programme
  • Major contributions to the organisation’s strategy and work plan
  • initiation of new partnerships, projects and funding opportunities
  • Jointly responsible for sourcing and delivery of revenue targets, both for commercial clients and R&D / grant funding
  • Recruiting and leading a team of technologists as well as convening a virtual team across other functions
  • Pitching, explaining and communicating our work, including high profile speaking engagements, partnership negotiations, press interviews
  • Working with the delivery team to champion and oversee delivery of key projects - whether commercial or research-led
what we’re looking for
  • Broad technical experience with virtual or augmented reality: can demonstrate examples of projects. Wide understanding of current technology debates in the areas of virtual, augmented and mixed reality, related user experience technologies such as haptics, touch and tangible interfaces
  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills: can show examples such as presentations at high profile events, working with clients, media interviews, written work
  • Pro-active and self-confident, adaptable and able to cope with ambiguity, changing and evolving priorities whilst being able to identify new opportunities
  • Adaptable communication style - able to liaise with and influence a variety of stakeholders including public sector organisations, large corporations, startups, and creative practitioners
  • Team and people management experience - experience of both direct line management and working with teams in a matrix structure is required
  • Successful experience of working in an R&D environment, capability to gain instant credibility in a senior R&D technology community, experience of winning funding for R&D projects
  • Experience of working in an immersive production environment is an advantage
